In 2016, voters moved to eliminate the ward system within the City. Council members and the Mayor are now elected at large.
Filing & Candidacy for City Offices
The individual wishing to become a candidate needs to acquire a “Nomination Petition” from City Hall.
The candidate must obtain 25 signatures of registered voters from any eligible voter(s) in the City Limits of Le Sueur. Signers of the petition are limited to only signing 1 candidate’s petition for a respective position. If a petition includes a signature of someone that has already signed another petition for that same position, said document will be invalidated.
The individual candidate files an Affidavit of Candidacy with City Hall and pays a $2 filing fee.
Candidates may withdraw their candidacy no later than 2 days after the last day of filing.
Candidates must be 21 years of age at the time of taking office, be a U.S. citizen, a resident of the City of Le Sueur for at least 30 days before the election and be a qualified city voter.
An individual convicted of a felony under state or federal law cannot hold an elective office unless their civil rights have been restored.
